Stop Posting the Same Kind of Content: Six Post Types That Work

Last updated August 2026 · 6 min read

Look at most small business social accounts and you will find one kind of post repeated forever: the product, the price, the call to action. Then confusion about why engagement keeps falling.

The mechanism is simple. People learn what your account is. If every post asks for money, they learn to scroll past, and once they have learned that, the occasional genuinely good post gets scrolled past too.

The six types, and what each is for

1. Casual / everyday

Nothing being sold. The workspace, the team, an ordinary moment. This looks like the least valuable post you can make, and it is the one that makes the others work. Familiarity is what stops people scrolling past you later.

Roughly a third of what you post.

2. Tip / how-to

Teach something small and complete. Not a teaser, not "link in bio for the answer", the whole thing, free.

This earns saves and shares, which are the strongest signals most platform algorithms have. It also does something no advert can: it demonstrates you know what you are talking about rather than claiming it.

Roughly a quarter.

3. Behind the scenes

The work as it actually is, the mess, the process, the half-finished thing. Polish actively hurts here. People trust businesses they feel they have seen inside, and this is the cheapest trust you will ever buy.

Once a week.

4. Testimonial / results

Someone else's words about you. The most persuasive content available and the easiest to ruin: lead with the customer's own phrasing and keep your commentary to one line. The moment you start selling around it, the proof stops working.

Once a week.

5. Product showcase

What it is, who it is for, one specific benefit. No discount, no urgency, this is a showcase and not a sale. Most businesses conflate the two and end up running a permanent sale, which teaches customers to wait.

Once a week.

6. Sale / offer

A specific offer with a real deadline. The one that converts, and the one to use least. An account that discounts constantly has trained its audience never to pay full price.

Once or twice a month.

Why this matters for the image too

The post type should decide the picture, not just the words. A sale post wants a bright, high-contrast product shot that stops a scroll. A behind-the-scenes post wants something that looks phone-shot and slightly imperfect. Use the same style for both and one of them is wrong, usually in a way nobody can name but everybody feels.

This is where most AI image generation goes astray. "Make an image for this caption" produces the same polished stock-looking photo every time, because the caption alone does not say what the image is for.

A month that works

Thirty posts: ten casual, seven tips, four behind-the-scenes, four testimonials, four product, one or two offers.

Notice that only two of thirty ask for money, and those two will perform better than thirty sales posts would have, because by then the audience knows who you are and has some reason to believe you.

MyNexusBiz plans the month with this mix built in, and writes each post and generates each image for the type it actually is.
